Mother Denim Introduces a Capsule Collection Inspired by David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust Period.
Jean genies will connect with Mother's new capsule line.
A collection honoring David Bowie's extraterrestrial Ziggy Stardust, the late musician's alien rockstar alter ego and stage character in the early '70s, will be unveiled by the Los Angeles-based company on Tuesday.
“As a brand rooted in the experiences of growing up in the ’70s, the opportunity to design with the imagery and iconography of The Ziggy Stardust era felt like a full-circle moment,” said Tim Kaeding, Mother creative director, and co-founder.
The T-shirts, tanks, and sweatshirts in this line are designed to look like concert tees from the past. The tops' sparkly typefaces and marquee-inspired patterns set the tone for the symbology of the whole collection. The Strong and Quiet Type tank has a "bootlegged-in-the-parking-lot vibe with a fading screen print," according to Mother, while The Grab Bag Crop Tee lists some of Bowie's most popular tunes.
On the back and the arms of a cropped raglan cardigan, Bowie's name and the lightning bolt design are included. A pair of socks make reference to Bowie's best-selling single "Let's Dance," which is also the name of a song from his 1983 album of the same name.
The collection’s hero piece is the Super Cruiser flare jeans with gold stars and “The Jean Genie” printed across the backside.
“With this collection, Bowie’s quintessential sense of glam shines through—all with Mother’s signature touch,” Kaeding said.
The Mother x David Bowie collection will retail for $28-$475 and will be available in stores globally and on Mother’s website.
