Rick Owens Fall Winter 2024-2025 Menswear collection fashion show at Paris Men Fashion Week FW24
With a unique approach, Rick Owens presented his Fall Winter 2024–2025 Menswear Collection, setting up his Parisian residence as the stage for the runway presentation. Known for his cutting-edge and unconventional designs, Owens made a stance against modern mass luxury because he believed it to be fostering an intolerable standard of beauty that he correctly refers to as "airport beauty." This season, Owens sought to challenge conventional boundaries and embrace non-traditional forms of beauty to create a fully realised and genuine fashion experience.
"Porterville," the collection's title, honours the California town where Owens spent his early years. He remembers Porterville as "bleak," citing its prejudice as a motif that speaks to his personal experiences. But Owens views his Parisian flat as a haven, and by letting others inside for the performance, he hopes to combat bigotry.
Owens's selection of partners for the collection demonstrates his unwavering dedication to combating bigotry. By defying conventional footwear rules, London-based designer Straytukay offered inflated rubber boots with insectoid looks. Leo Prothman, a fellow Londoner, gave Owens's well-known Kiss boots a fresh makeover on the runway.
The collection gained a whimsical touch from the hard-to-manufacture coats and trousers designed by rubber couture Matisse Di Maggio. Furthermore, Owens's dedication to varied representation was further shown with the addition of Russian trans artist Gena Marvin.
Beyond the ways that Owens's collection subverts traditional fashion, it acts as a shield for the individual against the unimportant and the commonplace.
Strong but whimsical fluffed jumpsuits and capes, airbag-like balled body wrappings, and exaggerated shoulders of duvet coats all conveyed power and personality. A more in-depth examination of archetypes throughout the collection was suggested by the story of adolescence and the distortion of classic Perfecto jackets.
Owens's Geobasket shoe was an unexpected addition; it was out of place and suggested an outreach to a wider demographic. With its emphasis on the classic adolescent, the book speaks to people who are now navigating their own "Porterville," which is a metaphor for harsh and intolerable surroundings.
