Marc Jacobs' Spring Summer 2024 collection honours his remarkable fashion career as he marks the 40th anniversary of his own company.
Instagram fans were treated to sneak peeks of Jacobs' four-decade fashion history in the run-up to the much awaited fashion show. But, in contrast to what was anticipated, he didn't spend much time looking back at his earlier collections.
Jacobs, who is well-known for his avant-garde and irreverent style, has always studied fashion but has never felt obligated to follow in his own footsteps. The designer's nonchalance is evident, indicating that his brand does not prioritise self-importance.
As one of the few designers with a 40-year career, Jacobs stands tall in an industry where longevity is an uncommon achievement. The air in the Park Avenue Armoury, where the performance took place, was thick with expectation. Even after all these years, Jacobs remained, in many ways, a young fashion aficionado.
The mood suddenly changed from gloomy to bright, revealing a massive folding table and chair at the rear of the runway. These were made by the late artist Robert Therrien, whose work Jacobs recognised as an inspiration in his show notes.
Under the imposing table, a bizarre sight was taking shape as the models came out. Jacobs used asymmetrical textiles and exaggerated dimensions to create a perspective-playing experience.
Disorienting effects were achieved by purposeful showcasing of seams, exposed foam-like textures, and changes that stripped the clothes of their everydayness. Models wore ladylike suits and evening columns with oversized paillettes, as well as outfits inspired by mid-century antiques.
The anthology was not slavishly faithful to an earlier time. Unexpected details like "ludicrously capacious" versions of his signature Venetia bag and track suits evocative of Juicy Couture via Balenciaga disrupted the story. A striking return was made by this bag, a best-seller from the aughts that gave a fun tribute to the brand's famous items.
Jacobs expressed his thoughts on paper, stating, "Through the unavoidable lens of time, my glass remains full of wonder and reflection." Thirty-one years after his groundbreaking grunge collection for Perry Ellis and four decades since his graduation from Parsons, Marc Jacobs remains New York's most reliable source of fashion highs.
