Exclusive Interview: Lohan On Redefining Artistry - A Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Power.
Can you tell us about the moment you first realized you wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
I’ve loved art and creativity since I was a child, but growing up in Northern Vietnam, where career opportunities in entertainment were very limited, I once thought pursuing the arts was just a distant dream. It wasn’t until artist auditions started happening in the region that I realized I not only had the passion but also the potential. That’s when I made the decision to seriously pursue a career in this industry, despite the challenges ahead.

How did your early experiences, like casting calls and participating in Vietnam’s Next Top Model, shape your outlook and determination?
The year 2019 marked a pivotal moment in my career when I earned unanimous approval from all three judges at “Vietnam’s Next Top Model”. That moment not only validated my potential but also ignited my belief that I could leave a lasting mark in Vietnam’s entertainment industry. Although I was eliminated early from the competition, I regarded it as a valuable lesson that fueled my determination to improve myself and aim higher. I underwent a complete transformation—not just in appearance and performance skills, but also in building meaningful relationships and gaining a deeper understanding of the entertainment world.

In 2020, my journey continued as I competed in “The Face Vietnam” and progressed further in the competition. It was then that I realized my growth was on the right track and that my efforts deserved to be nurtured and expanded. This experience honed my on-camera presence, professionalism, and ability to collaborate with top-tier teams in the industry. Modeling became more than just a platform—it was a canvas where I learned to tell stories through every look, pose, and frame.

The highlights of my modeling career opened doors to incredible opportunities. I became a member of the music group “For7”, where I spent three years honing my stage performance and connecting with audiences through music. Following that, I was fortunate to be among the Top 15 contestants of “Vietnam Idol 2023” (Season 8), a milestone that cemented my journey from the runway to the world of music and entertainment. Additionally, I gained recognition through my appearances in romantic web drama series, where my authentic emotional expressions and natural acting skills resonated with a broad audience.

Modeling taught me the values of patience, perseverance, and the power of self-belief. Those first steps on the runway not only opened the doors to the entertainment world but also helped me discover myself—a versatile artist continuously evolving and chasing dreams with unwavering passion.

You’ve faced many challenges along the way. What kept you motivated during the toughest times?
My motivation came from the unwavering support of my closest friends, my belief in my own perseverance, and the unexpected opportunities that came at just the right moments. I realized overcoming challenges wasn’t just about personal strength but also about the connections with those who genuinely believed in and supported me.

How would you describe your unique sound and style, especially within the Hyperpop genre?
My music creates a surreal universe where elements of Pop, Hip-Hop, and Rock merge with electronic instruments and distinctive sound effects. I aim to immerse listeners in a bold yet inspiring soundscape with abstract lyrics that challenge conventional storytelling. Rather than focusing on straightforward tales of love, I convey uplifting messages, encouraging listeners to see life through a fresh and positive perspective.

Your music combines diverse influences, including Pop, Rock, and Hip-Hop. Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
G-Dragon and aespa are my biggest inspirations. G-Dragon represents boundless creativity, while aespa inspires me with their ability to blend reality and fantasy seamlessly. They’ve taught me how to craft unique music that reflects my individuality while staying ahead of trends.

Moreover, both G-Dragon and aespa push me to strive for excellence as an artist by encouraging me to equip myself with new skills, such as music production, dance, and playing the electric guitar. Their influence drives me to continuously grow and evolve, aiming to become a truly distinctive artist.

What inspired you to create your debut single, Law of Attraction, and what message do you hope listeners take from it?
Law of Attraction was born from the end of a few significant relationships in my life. Through it, I wanted to share the message that loss can be an opportunity for rediscovery. Instead of being consumed by failure, I hope my audience learns to find happiness within themselves and channel their energy toward their true dreams and goals.

The visual elements of your work are striking, from your fashion to your music videos. How do you approach blending visuals and music to tell a cohesive story?
I firmly believe that music and visuals must complement each other to tell a complete story. Thankfully, I’ve had the privilege of working with Kye, one of Vietnam’s top stylists, who understands my vision and helps refine my image to align with my music. From suggesting song concepts to translating my abstract ideas into tangible designs, his collaboration has been crucial in delivering a cohesive and impactful narrative.

You’ve taught yourself so many skills—music production, makeup artistry, photography. What has been the most challenging skill to master, and why?
Music production has been the most challenging skill for me to master because it requires extensive time and effort. Unlike makeup or photography, where you can immediately practice and earn income, music production demands consistent investment without immediate results. Still, I believe that anything truly worthwhile requires persistence and dedication.

How do you balance all aspects of your creative process, from composing and mixing to video editing and photo retouching?
I maintain a detailed plan and prioritize the most essential elements. I’ve also learned to embrace imperfection; the first version of a project doesn’t have to be flawless because growth happens with each new endeavor. In the future, I plan to form a professional team to streamline the process, allowing me to focus more on the core aspects of my creativity.

Your Y2K Revival-inspired fashion choices are bold and eye-catching. How do you use fashion to express your artistic identity?
Fashion is my way of telling a personal story without words. I gravitate toward colors like red, green, and purple—not only because they complement my Fire element in feng shui but also because they exude positive energy. I strive to create a distinct style that’s bold, vibrant, and unrepeatable, ensuring my audience feels the confidence and creativity I pour into every outfit.

If you could collaborate with any designer or brand, who would it be and why?
I’d love to work with Dsquared2. I admire their boldness, hybridity, and freedom to break conventional rules. Their rebellious yet sophisticated approach perfectly aligns with my vision of music and fashion—individualistic, creative, and unapologetically unique.

You’ve mentioned wanting to venture into acting, particularly playing a villain. What attracts you to this role, and what would your dream project look like?
I’ve always believed that art is a space for exploration and personal growth. Playing a villain intrigues me because it offers the opportunity to showcase a completely different side of myself—one that’s deeper, more intense, and contrasting with the positive and gentle image my audience usually associates with me. Villainous roles are fascinating due to their psychological complexity and internal conflicts, requiring the actor to fully embody the character.

My dream project would be a Vietnamese feature film with a villain who is both intelligent and layered—someone who can provoke both hatred and sympathy from the audience. Ideally, I’d like to take on a role as impactful as the Joker, while still retaining a mysterious, charismatic essence unique to myself.

How do you see your music evolving in the future? Are there any new genres or themes you’re excited to explore?
I believe music is a journey of constant learning and creativity. In the future, I hope to refine my music production skills to craft even more unique projects, open a studio to support emerging artists, and even compose music for others. I’m especially excited to delve deeper into modern R&B, particularly its ability to blend softness in melody with raw, powerful emotions—much like Ariana Grande’s music.

Your story is one of perseverance and integrity. What advice would you give to other young artists facing similar challenges?
I understand that the path of an artist isn’t easy and requires a great deal of patience. My advice is to always trust your passion. Challenging times are opportunities to discover your potential and build resilience. View setbacks not as roadblocks but as lessons to grow stronger. Most importantly, remember that authenticity in art creates the strongest connection with your audience.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind, both as a musician and as an artist who’s defied expectations?
I hope my legacy extends beyond music to include the spiritual values I bring to others. I want people to remember me as an artist who inspires positivity, reminding everyone of the power of self-love, confidence, and gratitude for life.

Your latest single has already reached #1 on iTunes Vietnam, which is an incredible achievement! Can you share the creative process behind it and what this recognition means to you?
It’s been a long journey filled with emotions. I was fortunate to have the support of amazing collaborators, such as my mentor Đinh Hương and stylist Kye Nguyễn, who always encouraged and contributed to perfecting the project. I was deeply involved in every stage of production, from mixing to mastering, which was a challenging yet rewarding experience.

This achievement is not only recognition of my efforts but also a reminder that sincerity in music is always valued by the audience.

The visualized music video for your single is extraordinary, especially since you hand-drew each frame.
I wanted to offer my audience a distinctive and personal experience. The song carries a surreal tone, and I felt that animated illustrations would create a unique artistic space compared to conventional visual effects. While it was incredibly time-consuming and demanding, completing the project made me proud. It also allowed me to share a personal aspect of myself—my love for drawing—with my audience.

Are there any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon that you can share with us?
Currently, I’m working on an EP featuring three Hyperpop tracks. This is an opportunity for me to further define my musical style while continuing to spread positive messages. Additionally, I’ve recently released two Pop R&B singles for Valentine’s Day and Christmas, offering a softer, more introspective vibe.

Find a balance between your artistic identity and audience expectations. Art isn’t just about self-expression but also about connecting with others. At the same time, remember that authenticity will help you build trust and genuine empathy with your audience.

Your work reflects boldness and individuality. How do you hope your art empowers others, especially young people navigating their own creative journeys?
I hope my music and personal style encourage young people to confidently embrace their true selves, dare to stand out, and relentlessly pursue their passions. Art has the power to turn dreams into reality, and I want to inspire others to believe they can do the same.

Over the years, you’ve worked with many talented individuals. Who have been some of your favorite photographers or stylists to collaborate with, and why?
Peter Trần and Kye Nguyễn are two people I truly admire. Peter has an incredible ability to convey emotion through his photography, while Kye brings sharpness and boldness to my fashion. Beyond their talents, they’ve always stood by and supported me during my toughest times.

What does empowerment mean to you, and how do you strive to incorporate that into your music and creative projects?
To me, empowerment is about encouraging others to feel confident and resilient. I strive to create works that reflect positivity and hope, especially during challenging times. My music aims to introduce fresh perspectives, encouraging listeners to see life through a more optimistic lens.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I aspire to combine music with social initiatives, such as organizing performances to raise funds for underprivileged children. Additionally, I hope to create an environment that supports young artists just starting out, offering the guidance I once wished for in my own journey.

I’d also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to OTS Magazine UK for listening to and sharing my story. I deeply value the magazine’s dedication to supporting artists, particularly those on a journey to inspire through their art. I hope OTS Magazine continues to thrive and remains a vital platform for young artists like myself to spread positivity and meaningful values to the world.
